Interface Europe starts partnering within the S_Life project

Objective

Promote European Synergies and Co-operation for Sustainable vehicle along the Life-cycle.
The whole transport industry has to tackle major world-wide challenges such as combating climate change, sustainable use and management of natural resources and waste, energy saving, reducing CO2 emissions, etc.
In this context, Europe has adopted ambitious goals towards a 50% more efficient road transport system by 2030 decoupling economical growth with transport development needs, overcoming energy and economic crisis, accelerating catch up with the US and keeping ahead of rapidly developing Asian countries.
The technological development of specific parts of the automotive value chain is recognized as potential sources for technological progress with significant economic growth. However, since advanced technologies of each component of the transport-related industry are often based on certain stand-alone paths (e.g. addressing only recycling of old vehicles or only design and construction of new-ones but not looking at the entire value chain) is challenged by several hurtles, it is critical to develop a more holistic and integrated approach of the entire value chain of this industry.
Indeed, only such an approach will enable the whole sector to move up a gear in greening its entire life cycle from conception and construction via use, end-of-life and deconstruction to waste valorisation.
To this end, the S_LIFE project aims at developing the cooperation between European world-wide class clusters in order to help them developing new scientific (multi-disciplinary research environment), economic (new business models) and structural (RTD and new technologies-oriented) coherent greening solutions all along the value chain.

S_LIFE project will develop strategies and a Joint Action Plan to link, mobilize and coordinate regional resources with more focus on this challenge. The project will develop tools to assess the regional research potential, share and disseminate best practices through inter-regional joint programs and suggest appropriate financial support.


Partners

Leader of the project: French cluster Pôle Véhicule du Futur (PVF) associated with
German clusters Bayern Innovativ and RKW Baden-Württemberg, Italian cluster CEIPIEMONTE, Auto Recycling Nederland ARN Holding, Slovenian cluster ACS and Interface Europe from Belgium.


Interface Europe associated to Eight European regions to form a consortium to develop Sustainable vehicle along the Life-Cycle.
Interface Europe contributed to the success of the S_Life project by assisting the Consortium from the project initiation up to the full proposal writing. Interface Europe was fully involved in the design and writing of the project proposal (objectives and concept, relevance to the call, scientific state-of-the-art, scientific work plan, impact, risk assessment, individual participants, consortium as a whole, budget preparation) and will participate as a partner to the project in its Coordination, Management and Dissemination activities.

This success demonstrates once again the capacity of Interface Europe to fully valorize the potential of excellence of Research Stakeholders at European level.


Expected impact

S_LIFE project proposes long-term research and innovation driven strategies as well as a Joint Action Plan to affect long term-change greening the transport/automotive economy, by:

  • Efficient use of research capacities,
  • A better valorisation of research results/assets,
  • New opportunities for collaborative research projects.


The project with its integrated approach to the entire value chain of vehicles will contributing to the EU transport / automotive policy (including RTD, economy, innovation and regional development) as a whole in terms of:

  • Existing policy implementation,
  • New policy development,
  • New economical model development,
  • New approach for cooperation and optimal use of research capacities at the EU level.



Budget

The total budget of the S_LIFE project involving 7 partners reaches € 2.406 661. Funding of € 2.122 355.62 for three years project’s duration.
